About Dr Charl

After completing my medical internship and 2 more years in state hospitals I started in private practice. Prior to coming to Nelspruit, I had my own one-man practice for 25 years in the Eastern Cape.

Due to personal medical issues, we were forced to move to a warmer climate, and the decision was made to move to Nelspruit.

My favorite aspect of family medicine was always the surgical side of it, and I used to do all my own tonsillectomies, appendectomies, C-sections as well as deliveries and various other surgical procedures. Due to the worldwide change of the scope of family practice, the surgical side, unfortunately, has dwindled down to the excision of lumps and bumps under local anesthesia in the practice. An aspect of practice which I have come to enjoy more the mental health side, also and realized the immense importance thereof.

This part of family medicine, still needs to lose the stigma associated with Mental Health and there should be much more support from spouses and other family members.

Working with the “Golden Oldies” is also very rewarding – to improve their quality of life with dignity and respect is very rewarding.

The dynamics of private practice had change immensely over the 30 years of my career from the old true family physician that did house calls and knew all his patient homes and farm houses and other personal attributes, to a much more impersonal relationship and way off work. (I miss the old way of working)

Family medicine is still very rewarding and humbling, and I will always strive to walk the extra mile for my patients.
